CAKE DECORATING

ALOHA and Happy Friday!

My Question(s) this week......

Have you ever decorated a cake for a celebration?
Did you go big or small?
Have you ever used fondant icing?
Any tips or tricks?

I have not done this before but I am seriously considering it for my son's 2 birthday in October. He loves Mickey Mouse and I am thinking about making a Club house cake.

I have done a lot of research, read a lot of tips and tricks but I am scared to death it will be a catastrophe. I say this because I just made a double layer cake the other day and just the icing job on it was awful.

I have been watching lots of the cake decorating shows and they make it look so easy. I am probably getting in way over my head. I might have to do a test cake first to see just how bad it will be.

LAST QUESTION: SHOULD I TRY THIS OR HAVE I LOST MY MIND?

Play along at An Island Life for Aloha Friday. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life.

I have decorated a big cake for my mom's birthday. Never used fondant icing.
Sure you should try! :D

I cannot decorate a cake for the life of me! My best friend, however, is a former cake decorator and her designs are just stunning! She recently decorated a cake with pink plumerias on it for my parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

I have had made cakes from scratch and I have definitely made my own icing and frosting them. I recommend excellent icing bags and tips. Also, practising on the counter will help perfect what you want on the cake.

I have decorated in the past. Make sure that the cake is cooled first and that everything else is the right consistency.

Using a star tip is fairly easy and most cakes turn out looking pretty good if you stick with the star tip.

I don't like decorating cakes. The frosting is very messy. A lot of clean up, and it hurts my hands after a while to squeeze out the icing. But I went through a phase for about a year where I did it a lot. I think doing it once or twice a year would not be so bad.

Good luck!

I love decorating cakes, although I'm not very good at it. I'd echo the other comments: make sure your cake is cooled and level, use a good icing bag and tip, and most of all - put a LOT of frosting on the top all at once, then slowly spread it around without lifting up the knife or spatula. That should make it so you don't have crumbs showing. And of course, practice first if you plan to do piping!

you should TOTALLY give it a try!

You should try! Fondant is hard to work with, I think--but it can make it look great. IF the cake is just for family, I'd not do fondant (it tastes bad and is a pain) but, for show for a party...can look good. My first cake was a Batman when my son was two--I just used a batman cake pan and used frosting tips for the colors. It was ok, but he LOVED it. Good luck! I bet you'll make his little eyes light up with a Mickey Cake!

I've made lots and lots of cakes over the years for my kids birthdays. Personally, I think those ones with the little drops of icing are the easiest.

My tip? BUY ONE! lol.
(no, seriously, buy one)
:)

Definitely give it a try! It's really fun to decorate cakes. I've used fondant once or twice, but it tastes terrible, so it's rare. And I'm not that good at it yet. ;) It can look really nice though. Make sure the cake is thoroughly cooled and if necessary, you give the cake a 'crumb coat' before the real coating of frosting. Good luck!

I have decorated 2 cakes now (my daughter is 2). First was a barbie cake - easy peasy. Second was a Train cake. It was 2 layers with the first being tracks and the second being grass...I had sugar cookies in the shape of train/cars. It was a blast! I have never used Fondant.....I am not that talented :)

I say go for it! I haven't done anything like your talking about. You know Hobby Lobby has classes. I would love to take some.

I've only put icing on two cakes ever. I just mix and use a knife to plaster. Nothing special.

I love the artwork of how they do this though.

I did a Winnie The Pooh cake for my daughters first! I actually drew a Pooh on the top of a sheet cake! It took me forever! Now, the kids get a huge kick out of helping frost and decorate a nice round cake with their choice of sprinkles! I don't know how well that would work with a 2 year old though! I honestly think, whatever you decide to try, the best thing is the love behind it!

I think you should definitely try it out, but a test cake might be a good idea. I only make plain cakes, generally from a box, so I don't have any great advice lol

Fondant is not bad, but you NEED to practice to get a good feel for it. You can do it!!! :)

I've never done anything that elaborate, but you should definitely try.

Ha...I have been watching cake decorating shows too! I even told my hubby that I should go back to culinary school to become a baker...he told me "well honey, since you never bake, and def not from scratch maybe you should just watch the shows!"

I think you should try it! I also think you should def do a practice cake! Especially if your gonna use fondant...

And take lotsa pictures cause I want to see! And if it works out I totally expect you to send me directions so I can start practicing for Marlee's birthday cake! :)

I can maybe decorate it a little, but nothing fantastic.

When I figure out some tricks I will def. let you know! Have you tried renting any books from the library? I was thinking I might do that...What day do you have to have your Mickey Mouse cake done?
