Skin Care

Aloha Friday # 33

Recently I went to a skin care party held by a friend of mine. She showed us all these really nice but really expensive exfoliation products,
skin rejuvenation products and cleansing products. Very nice stuff but also very, very expensive products, I am not talking $50 but in the $100+ dollar range for very tiny bottles of stuff. By nature I am a very cheap person and this type of stuff is so out of my league.
As she is going through her sales pitch she keeps pointing out how many people are resorting to plastic surgery and how these are better alternatives. This seems like the wrong sales pitch for me because I have never considered plastic surgery of any type. I am fine with my skin and my looks. I am not a vain person, I except what God has given me as it is.

At the end of the session she had everyone do a UV light test to show the damage to our skins from the sun etc. Of course I have sun damage, I am 34 years old and rarely, if ever do I where sun screen. Plus I have noticed sun spots starting to appear around my nose that didn’t use to be their. OK so the UV light showed me I really do need to start wearing sun screen.

Here is where it got fun when my friend starts in on her individual sale after evaluating my skin. First question, what type of skin care products do you use? Uh… Dove soap. Now I would like to say this, I have extremely oily skin and the Dove soap came recommended from a dermatologist. For years I tried many different skin cleansers and always broke out. I stopped using these facial cleansers, switched to soap and guess what, I have very clear skin with the exception of my once a month pimple. Sorry nothing is stopping that one. The only time I didn’t have that once a month pimple was when I was not having a period during pregnancy and breastfeeding. My skin glowed then. One of the plusses of pregnancy and nursing I guess.

Anyway, my friend totally appalled at my skin care choices tried to convince me that I need to get through a cleansing phase in order to properly clean out my skin and then I will stop breaking outs from using those products. Explain to me why I would buy expensive cleansers so that I can break out when I can buy a $2 bar of soap that I use in the shower and it keeps my skin clear. I didn’t get it.

So my question(s) for you today are:
What type of skin care regiment do you do for your skin?
Do you cleans, tone, lotions, sunscreen, etc.?
Do you buy expensive stuff or do you keep it simple?
Have you tried a skin rejuvenator?

Sorry for so many questions, I am just curious to know if I am the only one that really doesn’t do much for my skin. I am considering trying a rejuvenator but I really am not sure I need it or if it is worth it. Oh and I am going to find something that provides regular sun screen care for my face as well. I can’t keep letting the sun do its damage.

I use a Neutrogena bar on my face, when I remember to wash it, but I don't wear makeup and am not prone to breaking out, so I don't wash every day. Is that gross?

I've always been big on the weekly facials and plenty of spf in everything that goes on my face.

I used to use just Cetaphil and had no issues, but am getting older, and it's showing in my face! I'm going to keep checking in to see if there are any tips.

I love Dove. I use a face wash right in the shower. I don't use anything else on my face. The face wash on sale is a few dollars.

I keep it simple. Dove facial wash followed by Ahava moisturizer. Sunscreen only when I know I'll be in the sun for a concentrated amount of time.

Let me guess....she's new with Mary Kay??? Sorry if I'm wrong, but I spent many years drinking the pink kool-aid and it sounded familiar.

I'm 42 and have great skin, but when you get older you DO need to take care of it. Sunscreen - really important. There is not cookie-cutter regime for everyone. If using Dove works for you, then fabulous and there's NOTHING wrong with it! I have oily skin and I do use "expensive" products but I don't use as much or as often as the bottles say to, or it would be overkill.

All I can say is don't buy into the "hype". Do what works for YOU, and chances are you can find what will work at Walmart for wayyyy less than the mall!

I use Mary Kay. It work great.

Yep, my face didn't clear up until I started using dove. Cheap, easy, and it works. What's not to love?

I had the same experience with a sales pitch. The saleslady was horrified that I use Dove. I loved the products, but it's just not worth it to me to spend that much money on vanity. And it takes so much time. I'm so not into complicated regimens.

Every summer, I tell myself that pale is beautiful because skin cancer isn't... but I haven't been able to convince myself yet. I wear sunscreen when I know I'll be in the sun over the middle of the day, when the suns rays are their harshest, but otherwise not. I hate the feeling of it and the smell of it.

I barely use anything. I have break-outs sometimes so try to prevent those :)

I have always had acne-prone skin, so I have to use something on it- right now sacilic acid in like an acne cream. Plus dry spots which = moisturizer. It is a huge pain.
I vote that, if the Dove is working for you, stick with that!

I actually only wash w/ water also. I don't wear foundation or blush so why bother? I do however wear sunblock & I typically use Neutrogenia face moisturizer w/ a 45. You can get it tinted or untinted.

I don't do much either. I do use a daily face wash in the shower because my face gets very oily during the day otherwise. And I'll use moisturizer in the winter but only if my face gets really dry. Like you, I tend to use the products that I've found which work well, and don't vary from those much.

I'm a Clinique gal - just the extra mild face soup, moisturing gel, and since I have acne prone skin I used 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. This has worked great for years and it really is not expensive. Maybe $100/year.

I do use Neutrogenca sun block on my face anytime I'm outside and always a hat and sunglasses.

I have very acne prone skin so I do have quite an elaborate face washing, moisturizing, sun screening process...

BUT! I try to stick with the cheapest stuff that works. There is no reason to spend more than 10-20 bucks on a product EVER, IMO!

Before I had kids I used to use Clinique and spent a lot of money on everything. Now I use a simple moisturizer with SPF and wash my face while showering. No time or money for anything fancy these days.

You are not the only one.

I use dove soap to clense. Once a day. And I love this lotion from cost-co. It's really wonderful. It only costs $20 every two or three months. My skin have more problems if I didn't use it.

I do have a prescription to differin 3%. It's a retinol-based product. It helps smoothness and supposedly acne. It makes a difference somwhat so I use it. It costs $35 every 3 months.

I do wear sunscrean. I like the sun but I avoid direct sunlight. I figure that avoiding skin damage is probably the best thing I can do for my skin. I do not wear expensive sunscrean.

My Mom used dermalogica lotion and I tried it once. It really is good stuff. It's more expensive but it lasts for a while. I just hate having to go to some spa to buy it because it isn't sold very many places. If it is inconvenient for me to buy then I most likely won't.

Oh, I get my hair highlighted every 8 weeks. That REALLY helps my skin. By about week 7 I start breaking out again but clear right back up after I get it done again.

And, everything wrong with my skin completely cleared up during pregnancy and about 5 months after my kids were born. So most of my skin issues would be hormones. Lovely.

I did start taking a mild birth control to help with an ovarian cyst and it has been the best thing for my skin, too. So that was a nice aside.

I think, the simpler, the better. I just couldn't spend THAT much on skin care products and feel like I had to spend that much for the rest of my life!!! It would drive me crazy!

I use a modified version of the Clinique 3-step skincare system for acne. It's "middle of the road" as far as cost is concerned.

I don't usually wear sunscreen, since I'm rarely in direct sunlight for long periods of time. ;)

I wash my face with just water. I use every day Bare Escentuals Skin Rev-er Upper on my face. I use Oxygenated Advanced Healing cream for diabetics on my legs and arms.

I use a face wash in the shower but also use Noxzema and a sunscreen.

Nina, you had me cracking up through your story (and I'm at work right now so I had to hold it in! LOL) I'm with you - whatever the heck works, use it!!

Here's my routine...

In my late 20's, I started getting adult acne around my jaw line, no where else, very strange. And it would not go away. Big, deep sores, it was AWFUL. So I tried Proactiv, cuz I had seen all the commericals, blah, blah, blah, but I must say, it cleared up my skin instantly and I was hooked. I will say the ONLY thing I don't like about it is, once you sign up to receive it, they put you on a monthly auto order program where you have to keep re-buying it over and over. Well, to me that's not really necessary, esp. since their idea of a one month supply and mine are two different things - my bottles lasted almost 3 months. So I stocked up for a while and then cancelled my subscription. When that ran out, I used Nutrogena (sp?) face wash from Walmart (which I still use as my cleanser) and haven't had any issues (except the occasional ones monthly, like you described). But then Josh hit puberty and bam, his face broke out something awful, so I just recently started back up with the subscription to Proactiv. It helps him, but he doesn't use it as often as he should to really see the results I did. We stocked up a few months worth and I cancelled again. So I've been using his lotion - which is suppose to keep you from breaking out. No problems here, so I guess it's doing the trick! =) It was 45 a month, which is too expensive I think to buy it long term.
