Playing Hooky

ALOHA FRIDAY Question:

Have you ever called yourself in sick to work but were not really sick?

If & when you do this do you go off for the day and play or do you just hang around the house?

I am a person who is such a big chicken that I have never called myself in sick to have a play day. I am just convinced that I would get caught so it is out of the question for me. Plus I would have such a guilty conscious that it would eat me up.

I have however called myself in sick for a much needed day of rest. I may not be truly ill but if I am run down and see no signs for rest in the future, I will take a day, send the kids off daycare/school and I will crawl back in bad. I then spend the rest of the day either vegetating on the couch or resting in my bed.

I know this is a bad thing but who’s not to say this day of rest that I take (maybe once or twice a year) isn’t keeping me from missing several days because I run myself so down I end up very sick. I know my body and I see the signs and I know when it is telling me it needs a break.

nothing wrong with taking a day off every now and then!

i can't recall ever calling in sick to go do something, only to veg out, like you.

however, if something super stellar came up and i just couldn't pass up the opportunity, i just might.

i have kept my kids out of school to do something fun. sometimes fun is a #1 priority - especially if things have been rough lately. probably not a good thing to do but i've done it a couple times.

Weird. I can read the first part of your post on Google reader, but when I click through, it's all nonsense characters.

As for your question, I'm too chicken to call in sick for a play day. However, because I'm a nurse and we have to call in sick so early (so we can be replaced), sometimes, I'm feeling better by the time my shift comes around... when that happens I still stay close to home, but I use the day to get stuff done!

(Your post displays in Wingding on my computer...is it in a weird font?)

I confess, I've taken my fair share of non-sick sick days. Usually I just stayed at home and relaxed, but once I went for a leisurely bike ride down to my favorite bagel shop and had lunch. I even got hot chocolate and a huge ginger cookie for dessert. Then I went to the library and spent the afternoon reading outside. It was perfect!

Yes. When I worked outside of the house, there would be days that I would call in because I needed a "me" day.

Now, I get no days off. :)

In high school I had a boyfriend who was very controlling and needy and didn't ever want to go anywhere without me. He called me in sick for work a few times himself, when he didn't want me to go. Needless to say, that relationship didn't last!

Happy Aloha Friday. Thanks for visiting my blog. :)

I did that at age 16 but not since then and yes, I did play hooky and got caught!

When I used to work, I did call in sick sometimes when I just didn't feel like going in...especially in college, but now I can't call in sick! LOL :)

Have a great day!

I have called in for a rest day on occasion, when I was working. But did not venture out to play.
I guess I felt it was justified since I worked more than my alloted salaried 40 hours per week and even on weekends.

Silly but I never did while I was working.

But now? What I wouldn't give for a "Play Hooky" day all to myself! Where do I sign up for THAT?

I normally get really sick about once each winter so I save my sick days for when I am really sick!

I never have done that, but I think you are wise to know when you need a day of rest.

I never did...until I was dating my husband--then I played hooky three times I remember!! 1x I even bumped into a co-worker going to dinner that night. But, she just said she was glad I felt better...

I never did.

I think it is OK to take a day of rest for a sick day because you are right, sometimes if you can just rest it wards off a big illness.

I don't have a job to call into, but I didn't when I did. My husband never calls in sick to go do something fun. He has enough days off to use those for time off. He's called in sick when he just hasn't felt really great. But then he works from home. He has enough sick days and time-off days that he uses them for what they are intended for and the issue of just playing hookie has never come up.

Honesty is always the best policy!

Yes I've had to do that when I used to work and ran out of money and couldn't pay my fare to get to work and I didn't have a vehicle. Hard times they were.

In response to your question about ants...we bought some poison they take back to the nest with them..it says it takes 2 weeks to work so we are just waiting.

Back in my 20's (egads, that was awhile ago!), I called in a few times a years just because I couldn't stand the thought of going into the office. When I was working in a law firm a few years ago, I only ever called in when I absolutely had no choice - kids were sick. I hated missing any time at all.

Errr, yes...but that was before I thought it was unethical. :)
