A couple years ago I found this wonderful lady who makes these amazing birthday cakes. She doesn’t cost any more than buying a cake at Wal-mart or Kroger and it is a much better cake.
Last year I missed her for Luke’s birthday because his birthday is right after Christmas, I waited to long to order it and she was too busy for the holidays. I was mad but found somewhere else to get a cake that wasn’t nearly as good. Well Thomas’s first birthday is coming up in a couple weeks so I am planning ahead and calling early. I am not missing my opportunity for another good cake. I call her to see about getting a cake. Darn my luck she will be on vacation that week in Florida. Now I have to find someone else to do his cake. WHY, WHY, WHY…..
Anyone have any suggestions for a first birthday cake theme idea? I did Whiney the Pooh for Luke’s first birthday and then Thomas the Train for the next three birthdays. I want something different for Thomas’s first birthday. I thought about Elmo but I am just not completely sold on Elmo probably because I don’t want a cake full of red icing.

Birthday cake dilemma….
What have you done for your little ones first birthday parties? Did you go big or small, all out or did you keep it simple with just family?

We did a monkey theme birthday party for my boys 1st birthday. They each had a monkey face cake which was so easy to do. You could also just go with something simple and basic like a round cake with blue icing and polka dots.
My boys both had trains - not thomas - but I also love a teddy bear - just two round cakes - one for the tummy and the other cut ups for arms, legs and head.
Then iced with the long stringy coconut - shredded - coloured light brown for fur ...

We do a family party, but it is far from simple. My husband comes from a huge family (11 kids) so any family event is very busy.
For a cake, I have always just made cupcakes. Well actually my stepmom has always made them because by that time, I've completely fallen apart, so she steps in to help... she loves it and gets my daughter involved in the decorating. Cupcakes are so much easier to serve than cake.
I went all-out with my first two's 1st birthdays (Winnie the Pooh and "Snowflake Princess"). But the 3rd time around I just did primary color balloons and stuff. I like doing cupcakes, too. Do whatever you think Thomas will enjoy!
We did simple and easy for all of mine...my youngest loves blues clues...i love the monkey idea from michelle! :)
we are having beans first bday this weekend and we are just making the cake at home. so she will have a little smash cake and the rest of us will have cupcakes :)
We did a tiny #1 smash cake and it was so cute! Then we had a larger layer cake with polka dots.
